‘Before I Die’ by Jenny Downham – Review

before i die Goodreads

Tessa has just months to live. Fighting back against hospital visits, endless tests, drugs with excruciating side-effects, Tessa compiles a list. It’s her To Do Before I Die list. And number one is Sex. Released from the constraints of ‘normal’ life, Tessa tastes new experiences to make her feel alive while her failing body struggles to keep up.

Tessa’s feelings, her relationships with her father and brother, her estranged mother, her best friend, and her new boyfriend, all are painfully crystallised in the precious weeks before Tessa’s time finally runs out

My Review:

I reserved this book at my local library, as I do most of my books. It was suprising easy to read. I’d had it for a week or so, but never got past the first chapter. Then one day, I sat down and read it until quite late at night. I didn’t finish it that night but you get the picture 🙂

I told myself that I wouldn’t read it straight after finishing The Fault in Our Stars, because I would compare it and was I’m in love with that book it wouldn’t be fare to this one. But what did I do? Read it straight after TFiOS. Typical. I’ll try not to be bias 🙂

Tessa was a very hard character to like. She was so negative about her illness and seemed to ‘want’ to die, even though she knew that she would miss certain things. I must admit, I was choking up at one point.

I can connect with Tessa when she was thinking about wanting a boyfriend or ‘someone’ there. Everyone wants to be loved romantically.

Before I Die was written beautifully, I couldn’t fault the writing. I just couldn’t give it a five star because Tessa was hard to ‘like’ as a character, as I mentioned before.

#2 Thoughts and Theories – Romance

thoughts and theories

Me, a sixteen year old girl who has never had a ‘proper’ boyfriend, reads too many books, and doesn’t agree with Valentine’s Day and hates weddings. Surely I can’t be writing about romance and LURVE with a capital L, can I?

Of course I am!

This is just my opinion, for a laugh! Comment below if you agree or disagree with what I say 🙂

In NO PARTICULAR ORDER, the things that I find most romantic!

1): Holding Hands.

holding hands

2): Dancing in the Kitchen

dancing in the kitchen

3): Watching films in bed. Or y’know, Friends/ TVD/Merlin/Dr WHO/Ma

watching movies in bed

4): Washing up without being asked.

5): Spontaneously buying presents for your boyfriend/girlfriend/ love of your life

6): Cuddles. AWW!

7): Liking the same Music is pretty romantic.

8): Participating in NaNoWriMo together!

9): Fangirling over Doctor Who together!

dr who

10): Telling the love of your life that you love them, it’s no fun being together but never saying the L word!

Well. That was that! I just wanted to write this for a laugh. For fun 🙂 I’ll leave you with one last picture to hold forever in your hearts. Louis and Flavia! Come on out!

louis and flav

I just put this here because I like his face. It’s a rather nice face, don’t you think? Flavia is georgous as well! So jealous!

‘Forsaken’ by Kristen Day – Book Review

Abandoned by her parents as an infant; seventeen year old Hannah spent her childhood wading through countless foster families until being adopted by the Whitmans three years ago.

Unfortunately, Atlanta’s high society wasn’t quite ready for Hannah
or the strange events that plague her.
Chilling visions of murder, unexplained hallucinations, and a dark, mysterious guy who haunts her nightmares all culminate to set in motion a journey of self-discovery that will challenge everything she’s ever believed; not to mention her sanity.

Sent to live at The House of Lorelei on Bald Head Island, NC for ‘kids like her’, Hannah quickly realizes things are not what they seem. Her fellow ‘disturbed’ teens are actually the descendents of mythical Sea Gods and Goddesses. And so is she.

My Review:

I enjoyed this book! At the very beginning I was drawn in and couldn’t stop turning the pages! Or clicking the pages, seeing as I read it as an eBook! Very funny…

The main issue that I had with this book is that it’s very clichĂ©, kind of predictable and Hannah/ Anastasia was a crier. She and her buddies cried over something so insignificant that I can’t even remember what it was.

The general story progressed well, I thought. Kristen Day didn’t try to drag it out and I thought it ended brilliantly! Just enough of a cliffhanger to entice readers to read the next in the series.

Romance in this book was also written very well. It wasn’t over the top, but it wasn’t too understated. (We all like the romance really, don’t we?)
I just wish that Hannah/ Anastasia had been more of a stronger character, she didn’t make me want to like her. I felt like I was making all the effort.

Also, I found this part of the book very amusing. Forgive me, Kristen Day but I’m going to have another giggle over this.

Page 177 – Anastasia and Finn are just started to dance. Anastasia gets worried, but then recognizes the music and realizes that she knows how to ‘shag’.

Yes, shag. Shagging was a very easy dance for me. Slipped to casually in there! I’m sorry, but in England that’s another (crude) word for sex. Is it really another name for a dance? Please let me know!

Sorry Kristen! Little british girl over here, having a bit of a laugh because she found a rude word in your book!

I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the series! Hope that my review didn’t disappoint! (Not that I’m going to change it now. Took me ages to write!)

Author Bio and LINKS:

kristen day I am a southern belle at heart with a crazy streak that desperately tries to escape at every opportunity. I love all things nostalgic, rustic, and quirky. I’ve been told I see the world through rose-colored glasses, but I prefer to think of them as kaleidoscope glasses – swirling and morphing reality into something I can digest (who hasn’t pretended those pasty lima beans were really kiwi strawberry jelly beans?).

I am the author of the DAUGHTERS OF THE SEA trilogy, which includes FORSAKEN, AWAKEN, and CHOSEN (Winter 2012). I love all books, but really enjoy writing young adult, paranormal romances. I’ve loved to write for as long as I can remember. My first published work was my poem RED in second grade (you guessed it – it was a poem about the color red – life altering, I know) that won me 5 gold stars and a spot in my elementary school’s poetry book. That’s when my addiction to the written word officially began. I was the only kid in fifth grade that actually enjoyed diagramming sentences. Go ahead and laugh – its okay.

When I’m not writing I’m making jewelry, painting, drinking sweet tea, watching the discovery channel, or going on random adventures in the mountains of North Carolina with my amazing husband. I graduated from Appalachian State University and dream of becoming a full time novelist.

#1 Thoughts and Theories: Alex Day

As I’m sure none of you know, I have had a second blog for as long as I’ve had this one. I don’t use it that much, most of the time I just post bits of my writing on it and some other things like that. I use this blog WAY more, posting reviews, hosting promo book blitzes and giveaways, ect ect. I have decided to combine the two blogs!

Basically, this means I’ll just post some parts of my writing on this blog when I feel like it 🙂 or something that I like at that particular point in time. Which leads me onto the bigger part of this post. I wanted to talk about Alex Day (a.k.a nerimon) today.

alex day 1 If you don’t know who he is, Google him.

He released his new song yesterday, called ‘Stupid, Stupid’

We need it to get to Number 1 in the charts by the 23rd! Have a listen and if you don’t like it, that’s fine! Click and away and don’t think of it! But if you do like it, please don’t just leave it at that.

You can download the MP3 on:

And you can get the physical copy from HMV !

I’ve just bought the song, I really like it and I hope it does well. This may seem random, but by January I’ll have regretted not doing this 🙂 It may seem to be a really random post for a blog is more for books and reviews, but I don’t want to limit myself to one subject. I want to show you guys what kind of stuff that I like, although writing book reviews is the main thing that will be featured on this blog.

Thankyou. Thankyou. Thankyou.
