Book Description:

RunesSeventeen-year-old Raine Cooper has enough on her plate dealing with her father’s disappearance, her mother’s erratic behavior and the possibility of her boyfriend relocating. The last thing she needs is Torin St. James—a mysterious new neighbor with a wicked smile and uncanny way of reading her.

Raine is drawn to Torin’s dark sexiness against her better judgment, until he saves her life with weird marks and she realizes he is different. But by healing her, Torin changes something inside Raine. Now she can’t stop thinking about him. Half the time, she’s not sure whether to fall into his arms or run.

Scared, she sets out to find out what Torin is. But the closer she gets to the truth the more she uncovers something sinister about Torin. What Torin is goes back to an ancient mythology and Raine is somehow part of it. Not only is she and her friends in danger, she must choose a side, but the wrong choice will cost Raine her life.

My Review:

Rating: 3.5/5.0

I can’t decide whether to give this a three or a four star…it’ll have to be a 3.5 star. (I hate doing halves, but there we go!)

Runes reminded me so much of Obsidian by Jennifer Armentrout it was unbelievable. Raine, a nice normal girl lives with her Mum, a boy moves in next door called Torrin. They annoy each other for a bit and go their separate ways. During the book they found out more about each other and Raine notices that there’s something off about him. Like…he isn’t human.

There were also parts that reminded me of Twilight, but there aren’t really worth speaking about. Besides, doesn’t every super-natural novel remind someone of something about Twilight?

Raine was an easy to like character, she wasn’t stupid and didn’t cry all the time, but saying that…she wasn’t much different from most other female character’s that I read about. There wasn’t anything that really set her apart from the other girls.

Torrin. Hmmm, well. What can I say about this guy? He annoyed me. Yes, for once I’m not swooning over the bad boy in a novel. He wouldn’t tell Raine anything about what he was, or what he was doing. He was under an oath, but it was still annoying! And there was his general arrogance that kept creeping up.

I’ve just read too many books with alpha-males. (TOO MANY IS NEVER ENOUGH!!!)

The last quarter of this book is where secrets are revealed. Raine finds out who Torrin is, and things really start to come together. But it took more than half of the book to get there, and so for me, it dragged a little.

In Twilight, Bella found that Edward was a vampire quite early on in the book, so we could explore the strange new world with her, instead of the book just ending a few chapters later.

(I’m using Twilight as a comparison because it is also a paranormal novel.)

Overall, if you like paranormal novels, then pick Runes up because I really did enjoy it, despite the points that I mentioned!
